History
- William T. "Cocktail Bill" Boothby (1862-1930) lived in San Francisco in the years before and after the 1906 earthquake. In addition to bartending in numerous establishments across the United States, he worked in California at Byron Hot Springs, Hotel Rafael, Silver Palace, and the Palace Hotel, and was a California Assemblyman in 1895. His classic bartender's mixology guide,
Cocktail Boothby's American Bar-Tender,
was first published in 1891. Although the 1906 earthquake destroyed the plates for the original edition, another edition was published in 1908, retitled
The World's Drinks And How To Mix Them
. The 1930 revised and enlarged edition (160 pages) was published under yet another title,
Cocktail Bill Boothby's World Drinks And How To Mix Them
, and quickly sold out due to prohibition-era private demand. The post-prohibition 1934 edition (170 pages) was advertised as "the most complete and authoritative encyclopedia on the subject of mixed drinks on the market."
Synopsis
- The book provides 1750 alphabetized recipes for mixed drinks, including cocktails, highballs, fizzes, juleps, rickeys, punches, sangarees, slings, sherbets, and more, with additional information about how to prepare, present, serve and store liquors and wine. There is also a brief biography of Boothby that includes the book's publishing history. The last text page is a full-page advertisement for this book, the inside rear cover is a full-page illustrated ad for Pisco Punch, and the rear cover is a full-page ad for cognac and whisky by Tonkin Distributing Co., San Francisco.
Condition Details
- The book is in
very good condition
; it has a square spine, a tight binding, and the text has no marks, tears or writing. The last fifty text pages have a small indent/impression at the top edge, with tiny nicks to the last four pages, probably due to a paperclip. The last page has offsetting from the red lettering in the ad on the facing inside rear cover. The textblock edges are clean, but lightly toned. The front cover has light edgewear with several creases at the top edge and a tear with attached chip at the top of the spine. The rear cover has very light edgewear, a few very small spots of soil and two tiny indentations, one at the top edge and one at the bottom edge. There are no hinge creases, and the cover has no curl. The paper backstrip is thin, lightly worn, and appears rough due to the underlying material. Note: In the picture of the spine, the chip at the spine head has been pressed back into place by the scanner bed. No unpleasant odors.
