Description
This wooden sculpture of abu’lul
ancestral figure originates from a Bwami tribe in Ghana.
A free-standing wooden sculpture, the bu’lul is often described as a representation of the Ifugao rice god. As such, it figures prominently in various rituals related to rice cultivation. The bu’lul is beseeched to ensure bountiful harvest and to guard and multiply the rice stored in the granaries (Tolentino 2004). It is also used in some healing rituals.
Carved from a single block of wood the sculpture dates to the early 20th century, a wonderful tribal object certain to invoke conversation.
