This African Nkisi power figure is adorned with a plant fiber raffia skirt, two fetish bundles, cowrie shells, metal sheeting, metal nails, metal studs, teeth, a horn and also has carved fetish statutes tied to the arms of the larger statue. These Congolese Songye power fetish figures were believed to gained their power not from the wood carver but from the Nganga, or spiritual leader who activated them. Their carving was considered secondary to their power. Small Nkisi were for individual families and larger Nkisi were owned owned by and served the community - often the larger statutes were too powerful to touch so they were moved with long sticks. Although protective, these are confrontational objects, with a warrior's attitude.
