    Description

This is a metal sculpture group which I understand most likely to be from Benin or possibly from another part of the area which is now Nigeria or nearby.     This seems to be typical of some of the Benin (formerly Dahomey) traditional bronze sculpture produced in this West Africa area for some time.     I have no expertise in this field so I make no guarantees but simply describe here as best I can what I see.    I do know the set was originally acquired in West Africa even if the exact location of the first origin is not entirely certain.    It is certainly not some kind of mass-produced and polished tourist item but a hand-made set with considerable detail as shown in my pictures.
I believe the material here is bronze although, again, I don't have expertise in metals -- all I can say for certain is that it is a heavy, thick metal.    My pictures should show the considerable detail of the figures from the front and also the back.
The items appear to be solid metal.   The four pieces -- man figure, woman and seats for each -- weigh altogether approximately 10 pounds or more, so it should be clear how substantial these are.
This certainly seems to be a unique group of considerable value and comparatively rare.    I am setting what I think is a fair price but I may be on the low side.   On the other hand, not being knowledgeable and thus only be able to make any guarantees other that to describe what I see, I am also open to reasonable offers.
The figures are, as pictured, a couple who seem probably to be a king and his queen, or a royal chief and female.    They are approximately 9 inches tall as seated on the two thrones or seats which are also pictured.    So the total number of separate pieces in the lot here is 4 items:   the man, the woman, what appears to be the main throne, and what appears to be the a slightly lesser seat.   Part of the appeal, of course, is that this is obviously intended as a set and it certainly seems that it is complete.
I don't know how old the pieces might be but this certainly appears to be a genuine antique -- in any event not the kind of manufactured slick tourist item one sees but instead being something from some traditional setting.    In any event, regardless of exact age, material and original location, this seems to be an exceptionally appealing item of African sculpture probably not easily found elsewhere, especially at any reasonable price.
