    Description

This is an antique Zaramo People (sometimes also spelled Zoromo) tribally hand carved Mwana hiti doll statue which was collected from Tanzania, Africa. Mwana hiti, a Zaramo term that means "child made of wood", refers to wooden doll figures that depict a female torso with a crested hair style. Zaramo female initiates keep such figures during their period of seclusion and coming of age ceremonies. After the initiation process the young woman keeps the doll as a fertility emblem until she marries and has children of her own.
This fine Zaramo Mwana hiti doll
specimen is made of wood, and glass seed beads and measures 11.75 inches tall by 3 inches wide. This antique
    Mwana hiti doll
carving is in great overall condition with some wear
and is missing one red eye bead
    .
