This midcentury African sculpture features a very tall elegant female figure. This beautiful Dogon statue is of a woman standing holding a child with both hands. A lot of presence and great dignity. Very nice patina and encrusted old wood.
Exhibiting a wide diversity in size, symbolism, intimacy and style, African maternity figures depict the ideals of beauty, fertility, character and action and many signify much more, whether the primordial mother or a legendary founding ancestor.  They were often objects of petitions or prayers for fertility and successful births. The maternity theme testifies to the importance of women and children to the continuity of each people.
This kind of wooden statue was commonly used as a shrine figure in order to ensure births and prosperity to the village. Usually representing spirits, ancestors or the primordial couple and treated with great respect by the Dogon ancestor cult.
