Description
Antique African TUTSI People Rwanda Handled Vessel Dish Carved Wood HutuFor your consideration is an authentic antique tribal artifact from Africa - a handled food dish vessel with a Mandorla form
Tutsi People (also known as Abatutsi, Watutsi,Watusi, Wahuma, Wahima or the Wahinda), Rwanda, Central Africa. The Tutsi tribes are a Bantu subgroup, inhabiting the African Great Lakes region in today's Rwanda and Burundi
The Hutu and Tutsi, along with the Twa people, form the cultural and linguistic group Banyawanda, which are known particularly in the West for the devastating conflicts which arose between them in the region in the 20th century
Rendered in a local hardwood, carved from a single piece, with a dark finish. Interesting Mandorla (pointed oval, resembling an almond) form with a rounded body underside and pierced elongated handle. Ornamented with a hatched pattern decoration in the banded trim
Note the thin-walled design, smooth surface and distinctive features, both decorative and utilitarian
Tagged on the underside by the previous owner - the prestigious Gordon B. Lankton Collection
Tutsi People, Rwanda, Central Africa - late 19th/early 20th century
It is important to mention that, very often, objects which are attributed to and used by the Tutsi were in fact crafted by Hutu and Twa pygmy craftsmen
