Incredible antique rhythm Pounder! The pounder is said to be a carving of a maternity fertility figure and is referred to as Deble. It is of the Senufo people of West Africa; the stone carving is a more abstract rendition of a Deble. Carved from one solid, heavy stone. It will display beautifully in a good African, primitive, or tribal instrument collection.
NOTES
A Deble can also be made of wood; it is used as a rhythm pounder in certain ritual performances to promote the fertility of the soil. Initiation of the Poro (or Lo) male society, performing their fertility dances, held the figure and pounded their heavy bases on the ground in unison to mark the rhythm. They also placed Debles in the fields during digging contests. The wooden Debles are abundant in the auction market at this time and are of full figural women.
