This is a hand carved antique African Dogon tribal people wooden statue depicting a mother with her child sitting on a Dogon stool. This maternity figure was collected from Mali, Africa and was made by the Dogon people and is in Good to Fair antique rustic tribally made and used condition with cracking in the wood and wood loss. This beautiful Dogon tribal fertility statue would make a fine addition to any African art collection.This Dogon mother and child statue measures 36 1/2 inches tall by 10 inches wide and weighs 18 pounds and 13 ounces.The Dogon are a ancient tribe believed to be of Egyptian descent and are a West African people whose culture, artistic expression, and complex belief system have remained mostly unchanged for centuries. Without a written language, the Dogon people interpret and explain their existence through stories, songs, artwork, and dance and are celebrated for their magnificent wood carvings. Although they have no written language the Dogon utilize a system of painted hieroglyphics to represent all things in the universe usually displayed on rock walls.
