Beautiful head of a Benin OBA King in bronze.
The King has tribal figurations in the face and very rare, a leopard on top.
For the Benin people, the leopard is a mighty and powerful royal animal, which rules the savanna as the king rules over his people. It also serves as a symbol of justice.
This bronze head is of high quality and was made with the “cire perdue technique”, and is therefore unique in its kind. Beautifully finished off in detail, it has a wonderful brown patina.
Almost all Benin art was created to honor the king , or Oba, who has reigned, with his ancestors, from the 15th century. Each is sculpted by hand, then cast in bronze.
Good condition, but with signs of use and normal holes of cast glitches. Please study the photos well.
