African 24" large GBEKRE Fetish statue of the BAULE tribe from West Africa.
One of the most dangerous figures at the Baule is this monkey fetish, called Gbekre. It depicts the god of the underworld but is also used by fortune tellers and at meetings of men to provide protection. Like sacred masks, they are kept in the jungle because they are dangerous to women and keep secrets.
This large monkey figure stands on a turtle. It has a cup in it's hands and a cloth of natural fibers around the middle.
Very nice grey age related patina. Good condition, with possible traces of use. Have a good look at the pictures.
